Assessment of Surfactant Removal Capacity and Microbial Community Diversity in a Greywater-Treating Constructed Wetland

Surfactants are among the main chemical contaminants in greywater (GW) and can cause severe health issues humans aquatic organisms. We assessed performance of a multistage constructed wetland system (EvaTAC) for GW treatment capacity microbial community linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) biodegradation. Physicochemical analyses were performed over 497 d, biomass samples collected high-throughput DNA sequencing. The was predominated by anaerobic conditions received an average oxygen demand (COD) LAS 374 32 mg·L−1, with removal rates 66% 43%, respectively. A positive correlation between COD suggested as design parameter removal. identified genera participating hydrolysis, fermentation, syntrophy, acetogenesis, methanogenesis, surfactant degradation, sulphate reduction. Among 15 surfactant-degrading genera, Pseudomonas predominant. Community richness diversity indices comparable subsystems, slight decrease observed towards outlet. degraders, Rhodopseudomonas palustris had highest relative abundance operational taxonomic unit (OTU)s all chamber. patterns composition environmental suggest that biodegradation occurred throughout EvaTAC system.
